The Intergenerational Teams Division . . .

debuted in the 2006 contest as a way to include surfers of all ages while still keeping the focus on older surfers.  It was also a way to celebrate one of the great aspects of the surfing experience, namely surfing with a wide range of generations.

WE ENCOURAGE SURFERS WHO HAVE SIGNED UP FOR THE 40 AND OVER KUPUNA DIVISIONS TO SERIOUSLY CONSIDER PUTTING TOGETHER AN INTERGENERATIONAL TEAM OF THEIR OWN OR JOINING WITH OTHER SURFERS IN THE KUPUNA DIVSIONS IN PUTTING TOGETHER A TEAM.

Intergenerational Teams Division

The new INTERGENER-

ATIONAL TEAMS DIVISION (ITD) was created last year as a way to celebrate the multi-generational aspect of surfing.  For surfers under 40 years of age, who can only compete as a team member in the ITD, the entry fee is just $35.  For surfers 40 and over, their $65 entry for their "Kupuna" division covers participation in the ITD division as well.  We have room for up to 6 teams.

The guidelines for the INTERGENERATIONAL TEAMS are as follows:

-       Each team must represent 3 generations - youngest & oldest must be at least 36 years apart with at least one other surfer representing the middle generation who is at least 18 years older than the youngest surfer and at least 18 years younger than the oldest team surfer.

-       Teams must be comprised of 6 surfers.

-       Team members do NOT have to be related to one another.

-       Teams must include at least 1 surfer under the age of 20.

-        Team members can ride any length board, including a boogie board or surf ski.

-       Team members can be comprised of both male and female surfers.

-       Each team will surf together in their own 20-minute heat.  This is intended to promote collaboration among team members and between generations towards a common goal – to win and, most importantly, have fun.

-       The team with the best team score wins.

-       Each team should appoint a team captain to coordinate submission of entry forms, to inform us of who will be on your team and the age of each member.

Intergenerational Team Math Tutorial

All Intergenerational Teams must include 3 generations of surfers among their 6 team members and at least one team member under the age of 20.  For example, a team may be comprised of surfers who range in age from 60, 53, 47, 40, 27 and 18.  In this example, the surfers who are age 60, 40 and 18 comply with the 3-generation requirement because the surfer who is 60 is more than 18 years older than the surfer who is 40 and the surfer who is 18 is more than 18 years younger than the surfer who is 40.

The best way to begin constructing an Intergenerational Team is to choose your oldest surfer and your youngest surfer first.  In this way, you'll have a clear idea of the age range for the middle generation surfer that you'll need on your team.  For example, if you recruit a 10 year old surfer and a surfer who is 58, that means the 3rd or middle generation surfer can be between the ages of 28 and 40, since 18 + 10 = 28 and 58 - 18 = 40.   Once you figure which surfers will represent each of the 3 generations, you then need to find 3 other surfers to fill out the team to 6 surfers, which is also a requirement for this division.

Each team will paddle out in their own heat and the highest scoring team wins.  In this division, when you are competing in a heat, you will be competing with the other surfers in the water rather than against them because they are your team members.  It creates a unique dynamic for a surfing competition.

We encourage you to form AN INTERGENERATIONAL TEAM.  Recruit your favorite grommets, middle-agers and Kupunas soon . . . or they might end up on another team!!!
