"Kahuna Kupuna" Defined:

They are Hawaiian words: "Kahuna" means "Big Chief" and "Kupuna" means "Grandparent" or "Older member of the community to whom everyone goes for advice and counsel."  So, "Kahuna Kupuna" means "Big Chief Grandparent" in Hawaiian.  The late great Rell Sunn, pioneer professional woman surfer, a Hawaiian ambassador of the aloha spirit and overall truly beautiful person, taught me the word "Kupuna" in 1995 at a fundraiser in Honolulu for Surfing for Life, the documentary I co-produced with San Francisco based documentary filmmaker, David L. Brown.  In her speech she described the movie as a "film about the Kupunas of the Sea" and honored David and I by referring to us as "Kupuna Kahunas" or experts about issues related to aging or gerontologists.  Rell had a great talent for making people feel very special and she certainly wove her spell on David and I that day.
