KAHUNA
KUPUNA GAZETTE: VOLUME 1 MONDAY MAY 30, 2011 12TH ANNUAL KAHUNA KUPUNA SET FOR SATURDAY,
AUGUST 6, 2011Planning is underway for the 12th Annual Kahuna
Kupuna Surf Contest on Saturday, August 6, 2011 and I want to make sure you know so you can mark the date on your
calendars. This contest remains the only amateur surf contest that has a special focus on surfers age 40 and over. A
true "Only-In-the-Bay-Area" type of event. Many thanks to those of you have participated in one way
or another in past events. It sure is a lot of fun each year, so let's do it again. Please forward
this email on to anyone you think might be interested in participating in the contest. Here's a brief synopsis
of the latest Kahuna Kupuna news.
BACK TO THE FIREHOUSE FOR POST
CONTEST FESTIVITIES
Our post contest festivities will
take place at the Pedro Point Firehouse, which is right down the street from the boat docks area of Pedro Point/Linda Mar
Beach. Please join us after the contest at 5:30 PM for a post-contest reception with live music, a full buffet
dinner featuring delicious organic Mexican food from our local Green Enchilada ristorante and another lollapalooza of an award
ceremony. Each contestant's entry will cover admission for the post contest festivities. A sliding scale
suggested donation of between $10 to $20 is requested from additional guests who want to join us at the Firehouse. Will
call tickets for your guests are available in advance or during the day of the contest. INTERGENERATIONAL TEAMS
the Intergenerational Team division is back again this year. We'll have room for 6 teams of 6 surfers per team.
Each team must represent three generations. Complete information on how to form a team (including
a mathematical formula to determine if you have 3 generations represented) can be found on our website at www.kahunakupunasurf.org. Contestants in the Kupuna divisions - you know,
those of you age 40 and over - are encouraged to take the lead on forming teams.
SURFRIDER
CONTEST FOLLOWING DAY FOR SURFERS UNDER AGE 40 For the first time ever, we’re partnering with the San Mateo County
Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation to offer a surf contest for surfers under 40 on the DAY AFTER the Kahuna Kupuna, which
would be Sunday, August 7, 2011. For more information about that contest, please go to http://ww2.surfrider.org/smc/ or http://www.facebook.com/surfriderSMC. Many thanks go to Dylan Christianson and the local
SR Foundation chapter for working this out with me. I’m stoked that all surfers of ANY AGE will be
able to be in a surf contest during this summer weekend.
ORGANIC
HANDMADE TROPHIES ARE BACK AGAIN
Trophies this year will once again be made out of a secret organic
material. And, no, it’s not driftwood. It’s something else that we see every time we go to
the beach. Once again, the artist extraordinaire I will be collaborating with to come up with the trophy
desing will be Candace McDonald. Check out her website at www.beachstring.com.
INTERESTED IN BEING A JUDGE?
We're committed to have judges recruited and
scheduled wwwwwwaaaayyyyyy ahead of time again this year. So, if you have prior judging experience and
want to judge, send me an email at kahunakupuna@comcast.net soon ("now" would be real good) and we'll
schedule you in for a 1 to 2-hour shift. You'll earn lots of good karma and plenty of gratitude
from me and a whole lot of other people.
WANT TO JOIN THE PLANNING COMMITTEE?
If you're interested in helping us out with planning the contest this year,
there's still time to join us. We'll be having meetings about once every two weeks between now
and August 6th. Call or email me if you're interested in coming to the next meeting and helping
us think through all the many details to make this event another great one.
WANT TO BE A CONTEST SPONSOR, KNOW A POTENTIAL SPONSOR OR HAVE A RAFFLE/AUCTION
PRIZE IDEA?
If you or someone you know would like to be a sponsor
of this year's contest or have a raffle/auction prize idea, please let me know asap so we can get them included on the
poster's final design. If they don't make it on the poster, we'll be sure to acknowledge
their support on the t-shirt and on the day of the contest. We’re wide open
to unusual ideas, so let your imaginations run wild and call me.
STAND UP PADDLEBOARD DIVISION THIS YEAR
Due to popular demand, a Stand Up Paddle Board division
will once again be offered this year. If you're interested, please let us know because we think it
will fill up fast. We'll have room for a total of 12 SUP contestants. OK, that's enough for now.
More in the Kahuna Kupuna Gazette, Volume II.
Stay stoked,
Roy Earnest, 650-438-6378
