The 8th Annual Kahuna Kupuna Surf
Contest and Fundraiser took place on Saturday, August 25, 2007 at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica, CA from 8 am to 5 pm.
The waves were consistent, 3 to 5 feet all day and just about as good as it gets for Linda Mar Beach.
This one-day contest welcomes surfers of all ages
and abilities each year in July. (This year's KKC contest was held in August, 2007 to accomodate the "Log Shop
Surf Shop's" annual contest, which usually happens in August but, due to a wedding of one of the owner's friends, was switched
to July in order to make it possible for the owner and his wife to attend.) The KKC has longboard and shortboard divisions in 5-year increments for
both men and women age 40 and over and divisions in 10 year increments for surfers age 20 to 39. The Intergenerational
Team Division welcomes 6 member teams comprised of surfers of all ages that represent 3 generations.
The event's main goals are to honor
the more "experienced" individuals among us -- in terms of "life experience", not necessarily surfing experience, while raising
funds for the Pacifica Beach Coalition
(PBC) & the local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation (SRF). Funds donated to PBC will
be used to provide jobs for developmentally disabled adults through HOPE SERVICES, an employment program for disabled
persons, to clean Pacifica’s beach during the summer.
These clean-ups supplement volunteer beach clean ups also organized by PBC and SRF
which, unfortunately, are not enough by themselves. Funds donated to SRF
will be used to support their water testing program and lab.
The
Kahuna Kupuna encourages the spirit of aloha through providing an opportunity for the Bay
Area surfing community to come together for a day of service to support two worthwhile organizations. It also brings many generations,
family members and friends together for a fun day at the beach.
In addition to the surfing competition, a post-contest reception, buffet dinner and an awards ceremony always
take place at the nearby Pedro Point Firehouse, starting around 5:30 p.m.
Everyone
involved in running the contest volunteered their time. Volunteers will be welcome at next year's contest
and can be of any age. For more information call Roy Earnest at 650-438-6378 or e-mail him at kahunakupuna AT comcast.net
