This one-day contest welcomes surfers of all ages, genders and abilities each summer. The KKC has
longboard and shortboard divisions in 5-year increments for both men and women age 50 and over and a 10-year division
for surfers between the ages of 40 through 49. The Intergenerational Team Division
welcomes 6 member teams comprised of surfers of all ages that represent 3 generations.
The event's main goals are to honor the more "experienced" individuals among us -- in terms of "life experience",
not necessarily surfing experience, while raising funds for Pacifica's Environmental Family
(PEF). Funds donated to PEF will be used to support their work as a non-profit fiscal sponsorship organization
for community groups in Pacifica that focus on the environmental needs of Pacifica. PEF currently acts as the non-profit
fiscal sponsor of the Pacifica Beach Coalition, Pacifica Garden Project and Vallemar Conservators. These groups are
all volunteer run organizations and use PEF's non-profit umbrella as a way to apply for foundation and grant funds that support
their work.
The Kahuna Kupuna encourages the spirit of aloha through providing an opportunity
for the Bay Area surfing community to come together - regardless of your surfshop affiliation, whether you're a shortboarder
or longboarder, old, young, male, female, etc. - for a day of service to support these worthwhile organizations. It
also brings many generations, family members and friends together for a fun day at the beach.
In addition to the surfing competition, a post-contest reception,
buffet dinner and an awards ceremony will take place at the Log Shop Surf Shop, 640 Crespi Drive in Pacifica starting
around 5:30 p.m. Many thanks to Log Shop ownerTaiten Cowan for making the meeting space in the back of
his shop for this event.
Everyone involved in running the contest volunteer their time. Volunteers will be welcome at
this year's contest and can be of any age. For more information call Roy Earnest at 650-438-6378 or e-mail him
